Liman Han, originally commissioned by Sultan Mehmed Reşad V as Mes’adet Han to generate income for Ottoman princes, was designed by the pioneering architect Vedat Tek and stands as a significant early example of reinforced concrete construction from the First National Architecture Movement. Built between 1913 and 1916 on a 504-square-meter footprint, the eight-story structure faced severe structural challenges in the early 2000s due to ground instability, which caused the facade to tilt remarkably by 107 centimeters toward the sea. This decline led to its gradual evacuation and use as a warehouse until the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce acquired the property and initiated a comprehensive restoration project. Completed in 2023, the restoration successfully stabilized the historic building and repurposed it into a modern library and institute, ensuring the preservation of its architectural heritage while integrating it back into Istanbul’s cultural landscape.
