The historical Ataköy Baruthanesi, originally established in 1700 as the Ottoman Empire’s largest and most modern gunpowder factory, has been revitalized into a vibrant public cultural campus integrated within a modern urban park. Renovation efforts successfully adapted the remaining four rectangular stone buildings, historical fountain, and the Selim III era Hünkar Mansion into dedicated community zones, featuring a library with a new steel mezzanine, an exhibition hall with a preserved wooden floor, a blackbox theater with telescopic seating, and a multi-purpose hall under an updated iron roof structure. Central to the contemporary redesign is a newly introduced pavilion structure situated in the geometric center of the courtyard, utilizing an encompassing ramp that leads to a viewing roof overlooking the sea and mansion while acting as a centrifugal circulation hub. The landscape design activates the courtyard with a grand gathering square, open-air event spaces, and scattered sculptures, all seamlessly tied together by a material language that strictly distinguishes old from new through the use of steel and semi-permeable wooden slats against the impermeable, centuries-old historical stone walls.
