The Feshane-i Amire, situated on the banks of the Golden Horn in Eyüpsultan, is a significant industrial heritage site that was first established in 1833 and relocated to its present site in 1839. Originally designed as the Ottoman Empire’s first modern steam-powered textile factory for the production of fezzes and military uniforms, the building is architecturally notable for its vast internal spaces supported by a rhythmic grid of cast-iron columns and a sophisticated steel roof structure added in the late nineteenth century. The site underwent a comprehensive restoration and was reintroduced to the city in June 2023 as Art Istanbul Feshane, transforming the historic manufacturing halls into one of the largest multidisciplinary art centers in the region. This 2023 revitalization preserved the building’s original industrial aesthetic while integrating modern gallery standards, successfully repurposing a nineteenth-century landmark into a contemporary cultural hub that bridges the city’s social history with the modern art world.
