Built in 1935 by the renowned architect Seyfi Arkan upon the request of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Florya Atatürk Marine Mansion stands as a significant landmark of Turkish Modernism, uniquely situated on steel piles driven into the seabed. Originally designed to provide Atatürk with a tranquil environment for both rest and governance away from the intensity of Dolmabahçe Palace, the structure functioned as a third Presidential residence where vital state affairs, Cabinet meetings, and scholarly discussions on Turkish language and history took place. The complex, which reached full completion in 1936 with the addition of auxiliary service villas and a kitchen, famously hosted high-profile international guests such as King Edward VIII and remained a seasonal retreat for subsequent Turkish presidents until 1988. Today, following its restoration and transfer to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the mansion serves as a museum, preserving its legacy as a pivotal “working office” of the early Republican era and a masterpiece of 1930s coastal architecture.
