The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque at Edirnekapı, commissioned by the favorite daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent and designed by the legendary imperial architect Mimar Sinan, stands as a masterpiece of 16th-century Ottoman architecture situated on the highest of Istanbul’s seven hills. Completed around 1565, the structure is renowned for its innovative engineering and its departure from traditional heavy masonry, featuring a massive central dome supported by four great arches that allow the walls to be filled with hundreds of windows. This unique design floods the interior with an extraordinary amount of natural light, creating an airy and weightless atmosphere that distinguishes it from other imperial mosques of the period. Its single, slender minaret and the absence of internal support columns within the main prayer hall showcase Sinan’s technical brilliance and his ability to create a sense of celestial elegance that reflected the prestige of Princess Mihrimah herself.
