Established by Sultan Mehmed II in the mid-fifteenth century shortly after the conquest of Constantinople, the Tophane-i Amire served for centuries as the central military foundry and weapon factory of the Ottoman Empire. The complex underwent extensive reconstructions to recover from fires and meet evolving military needs, reaching its definitive architectural form in 1745 during the reign of Sultan Mahmud I under the supervision of the Chief of Artillery and architect Mustafa Aga. Today operating as a culture and art center under Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, the monumental structure is a premier example of classical Ottoman industrial architecture, defined by its massive stone walls, elegant brickwork, and a striking layout of five large, interconnected domes that originally sheltered the intense heat of the bronze cannon casting furnaces.
