Vaniköy Mosque, situated on the Asian shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, was commissioned in 1665 by the influential preacher Vani Mehmed Efendi during the reign of Sultan Mehmed IV. As a quintessential example of a seaside yalı mosque, the structure is characterized by its modest rectangular plan, masonry walls, and a traditional timber pitched roof that harmonizes with the surrounding coastal landscape. Although much of its original fabric was modified during eighteenth-century renovations and a devastating fire in 2020 severely damaged its interior, a comprehensive restoration completed in 2023 successfully revived the building using authentic materials like cedar wood to preserve its seventeenth-century character. Today, the mosque remains a vital piece of Istanbul’s architectural heritage, representing the spiritual and social development of the Vaniköy neighborhood while maintaining its historic aesthetic as a prominent waterfront landmark.
