Located in the Dolapdere district, Pilevneli Gallery serves as a striking example of adaptive reuse that preserves the architectural essence of an underprivileged neighborhood amidst modern urban transformation. Rather than following the trend of demolition, the project maintains the building’s original “grotesque” concrete skeleton and historical patina, such as firebrick walls and layered paint, while reinforcing it with steel beams. This rugged, historical shell is intentionally contrasted with a sharp, minimalist “white cube” exhibition space designed to isolate the art experience. By strategically placing openings in this neutral envelope, the design fosters a conscious dialogue between the serene interior gallery and the vibrant, hectic life of the surrounding neighborhood.
