The Gülhane Park Cistern, likely constructed during the Late Antique or Early Byzantine era between the 5th and 7th centuries, stands as a testament to the sophisticated hydraulic engineering of historical Istanbul. Originally designed to meet the water needs of nearby imperial structures, the cistern was rediscovered in 1913 during the initial landscaping of Gülhane Park. Architecturally, it presents a compact rectangular layout of 18 by 12 meters, featuring twelve marble columns with Corinthian capitals arranged in three rows to support twenty sturdy vaults. After serving various purposes over the decades, including a brief period as an aquarium, the structure underwent a comprehensive restoration by İBB Miras and was repurposed in 2023 as an exhibition venue known as Gülhane Sanat, seamlessly blending its Byzantine heritage with the city’s contemporary cultural life.
