The German Fountain, situated at the northern end of the ancient Hippodrome in Sultanahmet Square, was presented as a gift from German Emperor Wilhelm II to Sultan Abdülhamid II to commemorate his second visit to Istanbul in 1898. Designed by a team of German architects led by Max Spitta and constructed in Germany before being transported in pieces to Istanbul, the monument was officially inaugurated in 1901 as a symbol of the growing political and military alliance between the Ottoman and German Empires. Architecturally, the fountain is a unique example of the Neo-Byzantine style, featuring an octagonal structure elevated on a high base with eight porphyry columns that support a magnificent dome. The interior of the dome is particularly striking, adorned with intricate golden mosaics that display the tugra of Sultan Abdülhamid II and the monogram of Kaiser Wilhelm II, blending Western craftsmanship with Eastern decorative traditions to create one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks.
