Commissioned in 1900 by Jean Botter, the official tailor to Sultan Abdülhamid II, and completed in 1901 by the renowned Italian architect Raimondo D’Aronco, the Botter Apartment stands as Istanbul’s first significant example of Art Nouveau architecture. Located in the historic Beyoğlu district, the structure originally functioned as a multifunctional space, housing the city’s first fashion house on the ground floor with residential quarters and workshops above. Its architectural identity is defined by a highly ornamental facade featuring curved lines, floral motifs, and circular balconies, complemented internally by a pioneering elevator system and intricate stained glass. Following a comprehensive restoration by İBB Miras that utilized original materials and advanced seismic strengthening techniques, the building has been reimagined as the Casa Botter Arts and Design Center. This revitalization preserves the building’s historical legacy as a hub of Ottoman “haute couture” while transforming it into a contemporary cultural venue that hosts exhibition halls, design workshops, and the DOCIST documentary film archive, reinforcing Istanbul’s status as a UNESCO City of Design.
