The Beyazıt Tower, located within the central courtyard of Istanbul University, is a monumental 85-meter-high fire observation tower designed by the Ottoman Armenian architect Senekerim Balyan and completed in 1828. Replacing earlier wooden versions that were destroyed by fire, this stone structure was built in the Ottoman Neoclassical style with four distinct sections: the base, the shaft, the gallery, and the flag deck. Its architectural elegance is defined by a circular plan and a wooden spiral staircase consisting of 256 steps leading to the observation gallery, which offers a commanding view of the historical peninsula. Historically, the tower served as a critical early warning system for the city’s frequent fires, where watchmen would signal the location of a blaze using colorful lanterns at night or baskets by day. While its primary fire-watching function has been superseded by modern technology, the tower remains a vibrant part of the urban landscape, traditionally illuminated with different colors to forecast weather conditions for the residents of Istanbul.
