The Bank Hotel Istanbul, formerly known as the Sümerbank Building, was constructed 1876 as the grand headquarters for the Crédit Général Ottoman. Designed by the Istanbul-born Italian architect Antoine Tedeschi in a refined Neo-Renaissance style, the structure served as a cornerstone of the financial district on Bankalar Street for over a century, subsequently housing Deutsche Bank and Sümerbank. Architecturally, the building is celebrated for its imposing stone facade, rhythmic window arrangements, and grand interior volumes, including original massive bank vaults that have been preserved and repurposed as part of the hotel’s design. Between 2011 and 2014, the historic monument underwent an award-winning restoration led by architect Han Tümertekin, which sensitively transformed the imperial-era office space into a luxury boutique hotel while maintaining the spatial integrity and ornamental richness of its banking heritage.
