The Istanbul Maritime Museum’s reconstruction began with a 2004 competition aimed at creating a contemporary structure within a highly restricted conservation zone on the Bosphorus. Replacing a fragmented group of older buildings, the project faced the challenge of housing a unique collection of forty Ottoman Sultan boats, dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries, in a limited Beşiktaş site surrounded by major historical monuments. The winning design treated the permanent boat collection as the focal point of the complex, utilizing a fractal interface to connect the gallery with the sea. By preserving a designated 1940s structure and carefully fitting the new gallery around the fixed dimensions of the historic vessels, the architecture acts as a tailored container that balances modern design with the symbolic weight of its imperial maritime surroundings.
