Located at the heart of the Karaköy district in Istanbul, the Karaköy Palas stands as a quintessential masterpiece of the First National Architectural Movement, designed by the prominent Levantine architect Giulio Mongeri and completed in 1920. Originally conceived as a multi-functional commercial office building to serve the city’s rapidly evolving financial hub, the structure is renowned for its eclectic facade that harmoniously blends Neoclassical and Art Nouveau elements with traditional Byzantine and Seljuk motifs. The building is characterized by its heavy stone masonry, elegant arched windows, and elaborate decorative carvings, representing a sophisticated transition from cosmopolitan Ottoman aesthetics to a more nationalistic architectural language. Today, this historic landmark continues to maintain its structural grandeur while serving as a branch for Halkbank, remaining one of the most significant and well-preserved examples of early 20th-century urban architecture in the Beyoğlu area.
