Designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), the new Istanbul Modern building stands as a transparent and light-filled landmark on the Karaköy waterfront, drawing direct inspiration from the marine heritage of its Bosphorus setting. The structure is characterized by a “floating” volume wrapped in a glittering facade of 300 3D-formed aluminum panels, whose concave and convex shapes evoke the shimmering quality of fish scales as they interact with changing sunlight and reflections from the water. Its ground floor is intentionally transparent, featuring rounded concrete columns and cylindrical mechanical funnels that create a soft, inviting landscape while ensuring seismic resilience for the 15,000-square-meter facility. Internally, a central grand staircase serves as the museum’s organizing spine, leading visitors through high-ceilinged galleries and culminating in a spectacular rooftop terrace. This terrace features a shallow reflection pool that visually merges with the Bosphorus, fulfilling Piano’s vision of a building that serves as a bridge between the historical fabric of the city and the dynamic movement of the sea.
