The Fişekhane, situated within the Zeytinburnu coastal strip as part of the Büyükyalı development, was originally constructed in 1881 as a specialized cartridge factory within the grander Zeytinburnu Fabrika-i Hümayun complex, an industrial powerhouse founded in 1843 by Sultan Abdülmecid. Architecturally, the building is a prominent example of nineteenth-century Ottoman industrial heritage, characterized by its elongated 180-meter rectangular footprint, massive stone masonry walls, and expansive interior volumes sheltered by intricate timber roof trusses. Engineered under the guidance of the Dadyan family, specifically the renowned Ohannes Dadyan, the structure reflects a rational and functionalist approach to military production that defined the empire’s modernization efforts. In recent years, the site underwent an extensive restoration process that preserved its original material palette of brick and stone while adapting the cavernous halls into a multi-functional cultural and social destination. Today, it serves as a vibrant urban center housing theaters, galleries, and gastronomic spaces, successfully integrating its legacy as a site of imperial manufacture with the contemporary social life of Istanbul’s Marmara shore.
